NVR vs VMS: a selection guide for security installers

When to recommend an NVR versus a VMS for video surveillance projects — retention, channels, and remote viewing trade-offs.

By Linki Security

Customers say “cameras.” Installers hear NVR or VMS. Choosing wrong creates callbacks six months later when retention or remote apps disappoint.

NVR (network video recorder)

Best when: small-to-mid channel counts, appliance simplicity, one primary site, predictable video surveillance retention.

Watch for: hard drive sizing, PoE switch vs NVR PoE ports, and manufacturer app quality.

VMS (video management system)

Best when: multi-site, advanced search, enterprise IT requirements, or mixed camera brands under one client.

Watch for: license models, server specs, and who’s on the hook for updates.

Sales conversation checklist

  1. How many days of retention at what resolution?
  2. Who needs live view after hours?
  3. Is alarm monitoring or access events tied into video?
  4. Who owns the internet and firewall changes?

Put it in the quote

Separate lines for recorder/server, licenses, storage, labour, and training. Linki’s line-item editor is built for that — no Good/Better/Best theatre required.
